On December 30th, we had a dumpster delivered and it all became real. We moved the entire contents of our kitchen into storage in the basement and got ready to renovate! Our wonderful friends, Ashley and Andrew, arrived that evening and helped us move the furniture and a few remaining kitchen items into the basement. To get a head start on demolition, we did some quiet work that evening--removing the carpet (disgusting!) and taking off cabinet doors. On New Years Eve, we worked hard all day tearing out the rest of the kitchen, drywall, and studs. When it came to ripping up the sheet vinyl, we were in for an unpleasant surprise: we had a half inch of plywood nailed and glued to the subfloor, two layers of linoleum glued and stapled, a layer of luan, topped with a final layer of sheet vinyl. After a day and a half of demo, we're still working on ripping up that horrible flooring! We plan to finish demo tomorrow and settle on a layout. Our initial plan requires moving HVAC, plumbing, and a load-bearing wall. That may be a little ambitious for us at this point... We'll decide tomorrow after a good look at our empty space. This project has already been an adventure! Our heat went out yesterday during demo and we haven't been able to figure out the problem, even after calls to an HVAC repair technician. We've decided to have him come out to fix it for us tomorrow. This is our first unanticipated expense and we're hoping it doesn't cost us too much. Luckily, it's been unseasonably warm and our house is still quite comfortable--especially for as hard as we're working!
Every sip of champagne we had last night was well deserved and we wouldn't be where we are right now without the help of Ashley and Andrew. They are demo machines! Below are some pictures of the first floor pre-demo. I'll add some post-demo pictures soon. I think we're in for a wild ride!
